이번 전시는 한국의 전통 판소리인 수궁가를 주제로 하고, 그 요소들을 해체하고 재구성하여 새로운 작품으로 만든 사운드 아트 전시입니다.
건축을 전공했던 사운드 아티스트인 김예슬은 2022년부터 ‘소리로 공간을 만드는’ 작업을 해왔습니다. 이 작품에서 수궁가의 멜로디와 이야기는 알고리즘에 의해 조각나고, 처리되고, 재조합되어, 소리로 지어진 꿈꾸는 듯 새로운 수중 궁전을 만들어 관객이 탐험할 수 있게 합니다.
프랑스 철학자 자크 데리다(Jacques Derrida)가 말했듯이, 단어와 문장은 그것을 둘러싼 다른 단어와 문장과의 관계 속에서만 의미를 갖습니다. 작가는 수궁가의 오래된 이야기를 조각으로 나누고, 알고리즘을 통해 그 조각들을 예상치 못한 시간, 순서, 위치에 놓아 새롭게 재조합합니다. 이러한 작업을 통해 작가는 새로운 관계에 의한 새로운 의미가 만들어질 수 있는 가능성을 제공하고, 오랜 한국 민속의 비옥한 토양에서 새로운 아이디어가 자랄 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다.
또한 이 작업을 통해, 관객이 듣는 소리의 연속선 중 어느 한 순간도 똑같이 반복되지 않고, 오히려 자연스럽고 유기적인 흐름을 만들어냅니다. 관객들이 전시장 공간에 들어서는 순간, 소리 속에 자유로이 잠겨, 상상의 물 속에 부유하며, 어머니 자궁 속의 아이처럼 경이로움에 가득 찬 경험을 할 수 있길 바랍니다.
Sound Space: Pansori – The Story of the Dismantled Water Palace
Sound artist Yesul Kim’s first solo exhibition
Yesul Kim’s ‘Sound Space: Pansori’ is a sound art exhibition that takes Sugungga, a traditional Korean pansori, as its theme, and dismantles and reconstructs its elements into a new work.
As a sound artist with an architectural background, Yesul Kim has been working on ‘building space with sound’ since 2022. In this work, the melody and story of Sugungga are fragmented, processed and recombined by an algorithm, building a new, dreamlike underwater palace of sound for the audience to explore.
As French philosopher Jacques Derrida once said, words and phrases only have meaning in the context of other words and phrases surrounding and contrasting them. By breaking the old story of Sugungga into fragments and letting the algorithm place them in a new, unexpected positions, the artist gives the opportunity for new meanings to be extracted, for new ideas to grow from the fertile soil of ancient Korean folklore.
As there is randomized algorithmic control involved, no one moment in the continuum of sound will repeat exactly the same, creating a feeling of a natural, organic flow. As the audience enters the exhibition space, the artist hopes them to be freely immersed in the sound, floating in imaginary water, full of wonder like a child in his mother’s womb.
