Hello! We have conducted the ‘Adding Soundscape on Public Art works Project’. We added sound to the public art works that we encounter while walking down the street to incorporate auditory element. Through this project, we explored what effects these attempts could have. In the video you can check out the results and the process of the project. 소리에 관해서라면 도시 계획에서는 전통적으로 소음 공해를 줄이는 데에 집중해 온 게 사실입니다.
하지만, 공공의 장소에서 우리가 사회적으로 참여하고 있다는 느낌과 소속감을 주기 위해서는, ‘집중되는 장소’, ‘모이게 하는 지점'(focal point) 같은 것이 필요합니다. 외국의 예를 보아도 광장에 있는 분수나 조각상 등이 있는 곳에 사람들이 자연스럽게 멈춰서 상호작용하는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다.

In regard to sound, urban planning has traditionally focused on reducing noise pollution. In the same time, we know that to increase the feeling of inclusion and social participation, public spaces need focal points. For example, fountains, sculptures or other works of art like in the square, where people naturally stop and interact with each other.

건축을 전공했던 사운드 아티스트로서 일종의 실험을 하나 해보고 싶었습니다. 그래서 제가 살고있는 곳 근처에 센트럴 파크라는 곳에 있는 아주 멋진 조각상 ‘지구촌의 얼굴(원용연 작가 作)’에 제가 만든 사운드 스케이프를 입혀보았습니다.

As a sound artist who has also a degree in architecture, I wanted to make an experiment where I add a soundscape that I made to the beautiful sculpture “Faces of the Global Village” by Won Yong Yeon in Songdo Central Park, close to where I live.

도시 속에서 유기적이고 자연적인 소리가 더 많이 들린다면, 그 도시의 소리 환경에 도움이 될 것이라고 생각합니다. 
또한 사회 구성원들에게도 시각, 청각적으로 공통된 경험을 함으로써, 자신이 이 공동체 안에 속해있다는 소속감을 훨씬 더 강하게 느낄 수 있다고 생각합니다.

I think that an urban sound environment can benefit from the presence of more organic, natural sounds. I also believe that by having a shared experience that is both visual and auditory, members of society can have an even stronger sense of belonging in their community.
